Founded in 2016 by Artistic and Music Director Philip Chu, Cantabile is a new professional ensemble made up of talented local musicians in Hong Kong. It aims to provide the audience a wide range of high quality music as well as challenging them to new ideas about performances. Cantabile musicians are all professionally trained, and have the ability and flexibility to perform both as soloists and chorus.
Apart from performing in concerts, Cantabile also aims to provide a training platform for young musicians who wish to pursue a career in music. They will be given opportunities to gain experience through rehearsing and performing in a friendly environment, along with other professional musicians.
Education is also an important element of Cantabile. Through workshops and masterclasses, Cantabile aims to provide the general public a chance to learn more about music appreciation and performance skills. Music can have various effects on people, and Cantabile explores this variety together with people who simply enjoy music making.
Born in Hong Kong, Philip Chu studied voice and conducting at University of Sydney and Sydney Conservatorium of Music respectively. He has worked with ensembles such as The Metropolitan Opera, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Macau Symphony Orchestra, Cantillation, Pinchgut Opera, Sydney Philharmonic Choirs amongst others. As a chorusmaster, he has prepared various choirs for conductors such as Lorin Mazzel, Jaap van Zweden, Charles Dutoit, Gianluigi Gelmetti amongst others.
Apart from the classical music field, Philip has also worked extensively in other music fields, ranging from Hollywood film scores to computer games’ music. He was part of the music creation team of some of the most popular games series such as World of Warcraft, Diablo, Soul Calibur and Final Fantasy.
Since moving back to Hong Kong from Australia in 2010, Philip has taken over the family apparel business and now frequently travels between Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Japan and United States for work. Although much of his time now devotes to the family business, Philip remains very passionate about music and formed the professional ensemble Cantabile in 2016. His mission is to find a balance between the family business and his passion for music.
Red wine plays a vital role throughout the search of this work/life balance and over the years Philip’s wine collection has grown significantly and now he has 3 wine fridges at home, and should cover for most occasions.
